What Canada charges

Vancouver

5.5% of the room rate

5.5% of the room price: a 3% Municipal and Regional District Tax plus a 2.5% Major Events MRDT. The 2.5% part was brought in to help pay for hosting FIFA 2026 matches, but it does NOT end with the tournament — the regulation runs it from 1 February 2023 until 1 February 2030, so it is on your bill for years yet. Both are worked out on the room price before other taxes, not on each other. On top of these sit an 8% provincial sales tax and 5% GST, which are general sales taxes rather than tourist levies and so are not counted in the figure here — the same treatment Toronto gets, where HST is excluded from its 6%. Counting everything, a Vancouver room carries about 13.5% in provincial charges before GST, which is why quoted all-in figures look so much steeper than the lodging levy itself. The province's worked example: a CAD 200 night is CAD 6 of MRDT and CAD 5 of the major-events surcharge.

Reg. 93/2013), Schedule 1 item 21 (City of Vancouver, 3%), and Designated Major Event Accommodation Area Tax Regulation (B.C. Reg. 12/2023) s.4 (2.5%) and s.6 (repealed 1 February 2030); both consolidations current to 6 October 2026 (bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/93_2013 and /12_2023) · checked 2026-10-09

Toronto

6% of the room rate

6% of the room rate. Toronto charged 8.5% from June 2025 until 31 July 2026 to fund its FIFA World Cup hosting, and that surcharge has ended — if you see 8.5% quoted, it is out of date. The tax applies to the room portion only, for stays of four hours or more, and covers short-term rentals as well as hotels; meeting rooms, food and drink, room service, internet and phone are billed separately and are not taxed by it. HST is then charged on top of the tax itself, so the two compound. There is no cap on nights and no exemption for children — the exemptions are institutional, covering shelters, summer camps and treatment centres.

Why Tourist Taxes Have Exploded

The Overtourism Response

Venice, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are using tourist taxes to manage visitor numbers and fund infrastructure repair. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the room price — the steepest rate in Europe, and a share rather than a flat fee, so it climbs with the price of your hotel. Barcelona hit 40 million visitors/year with a population of 1.6 million.

Conservation Funding

Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee ($100–200/day) funds forest conservation and free healthcare/education for citizens. Rwanda's $1,500 gorilla permit directly funds mountain gorilla protection — the population has grown from 620 to 1,000+ since 2004. Higher prices = better conservation outcomes.

New Entry Authorizations

The UK's ETA (2024) and New Zealand's NZeTA join the US ESTA in creating pre-arrival fee systems for visa-waiver nationalities. The EU's ETIAS launches in 2025 — €7 for 3 years, covering 30 Schengen countries. These are not visas, but they cost money and must be arranged in advance.

Budget Planning Rule

Add 10–15% to your accommodation budget for tourist taxes in European cities. For adventure travel (gorilla trekking, Galápagos, Machu Picchu), the permit/entry fees can equal or exceed your flights. Always research before booking — some permits (Inca Trail, gorilla trekking) sell out months in advance.

Highest-Fee Destinations to Budget For

  • Bhutan: $100–200/person/day government fee — mandatory for all visits
  • Rwanda gorilla trekking: $1,500/person per trek (non-negotiable, all goes to conservation)
  • Uganda gorilla trekking: $700/person — book 6+ months ahead, permit numbers strictly limited
  • Galápagos Islands: $200 entry + $20 transit card on top of Ecuador visa
  • Masai Mara (peak season): $200/person per day, Jul–Oct Great Migration period
  • Amsterdam: 12.5% of the room price — about €175 on a €200/night room for 7 nights, charged per room rather than per person
